Do you have cataracts? If you’re considering the possibility of cataract surgery, it’s important to know your options when it comes to intraocular lenses. At Shepherd Eye Center, we’re pleased to now offer our cataract patients the revolutionary and one-of-a-kind Light Adjustable Lens.
What is the Light Adjustable Lens?
The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens that allows patients to customize their vision after cataract surgery. Like other IOLs, it is inserted into the eye during cataract surgery.
However, the Light Adjustable Lens is made of special UV material, allowing it to adjust when exposed to UV light. When exposed to UV rays during special light treatments performed by your eye doctor at Shepherd Eye Center, you’ll have the ability to preview your results before optimizing your vision.
Once your ideal results are achieved, you’ll have your ideal visual outcome locked into place during one final treatment. With the Light Adjustable Lens, patients can finally have the vision they want after cataract surgery.
How is the Light Adjustable Lens Different from Other Premium Lenses?
The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens that allows patients to customize and optimize their vision to their exact specifications. Other premium lenses provide patients with excellent vision but never the ability to customize their exact specifications.
Using a photo-sensitive material, the Light Adjustable Lens is helping patients achieve the vision of their dreams. Because of its photosensitivity, you’ll have to wear UV-protecting glasses whenever you’re awake.
The only time you can remove the glasses is if you’re showering, sleeping, putting in eye drops, or washing your face. Wearing the glasses ensures that the Light Adjustable Lens is not activated too early. After cataract surgery, you’ll wait about three weeks to ensure your eyes have finished healing before beginning the next step of your Light Adjustable Lens journey.
Once your eyes are healed, you can begin by having your vision tested to preview what your sight could be like after activating the Light Adjustable Lens. Your results from this test will help determine your optimal vision and individualized prescription.
Your Shepherd Eye Center ophthalmologist will then use a Light Delivery Device (LDD) to deliver UV light and activate the Light Adjustable Lens. The Light Delivery Device distributes UV light and results in changes to your vision.
Each light treatment only lasts around 90 seconds. They are not painful or invasive, and most patients need up to three treatments performed a day or two apart before they achieve their desired results. Patients undergo a final light treatment to lock their vision into place permanently and enjoy their new eyesight.
Am I a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?
As is the case with most premium IOLs, not everyone is a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens. You may be suited for this revolutionary IOL if the following applies to you:
- You need to have cataracts removed during cataract surgery
- You don’t have any preexisting macular conditions
- You have astigmatism of at least 0.75 diopters before undergoing cataract surgery
The only way to find out if you’re a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens is to schedule a cataract consultation with the experts at Shepherd Eye Center in Las Vegas, NV, today!
