Lazy eye is the layperson’s term for a medical condition called Amblyopia. It is generally a result of poor visual development in early infancy. Premature and low birth weight infants are at greater risk for Amblyopia (Lazy eye). Strabismus is the medical term for crossed eyes; a condition in which both eyes do not focus on the same place at the same time. One eye may turn in, out or down due to weak eye muscles or severe farsightedness.
When Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?
- Your pediatrician should examine your child’s eyes during the first year of life.
- All children should have a comprehensive eye exam before they start school unless vision problems occur sooner.
- Early diagnosis and treatment of childhood eye disease may prevent vision problems later in life.
